Partners in Sustainability - Gaylord Opryland and the Commvault GO Customer Conference 2018

Approximately six weeks before the start of the conference, the meeting planner for the Commvault GO Customer Conference, Janyce Harper, alerted her assigned event manager that they would like to be a “green” conference. Denise Herrington, Assistant Director of Event Planning, brought this to the attention of the Sustainability Committee on property and they burst into action.

Chris Brown, co-chairman for Gaylord Opryland’s Sustainability Committee and Director of Catering Operations, met with Janyce the following week during a scheduled planning meeting at the property. At this point, he was able share Gaylord Opryland capabilities to support her “green” conference. He was also able to share an extensive vendor list, which the hotel utilizes to increase overall diversion at the property–items to be donated, reused or recycled are all considered. This list was shared with the entire Commvault planning team to ensure anything that could possibly be diverted was noted.

Through pre-planning efforts and the operations team’s hard work, the following resulted after the completion of the conference:

• 21,000 pounds of exhibit hall carpet recycled
• 200 leftover box lunches donated to local homeless shelter
• 40 poster board signs donated to local school for re-use
• 18 trees used for décor donated to Gaylord Opryland grounds
• Stir straws available on request at all banquet bars a new standard at Gaylord Opryland
• Elimination of plastic cups at all water stations during the conference
• Reduction of paper coffee cups during the conference
• Recycling containers placed in all meeting rooms, not just public space
• Elimination of linen during major meal functions

Through detailed tracking measures, Opryland has increased its diversion by almost 5% year over year and it is success stories like this that helps the resort reach its goal of another 3% in the next two years. Gaylord Opryland’s Sustainability Committee sincerely hopes more groups come to Opryland in the future in effort to host a more responsible, sustainable, and environmentally friendly conference.
